It started with
money disappearing.
One December, my father and I were travelling from South Africa back home to Zimbabwe.
The border was packed, so we stopped in Musina — the last town before the border — to rest.
Unbeknown to me, my father had withdrawn just over $1,000 from a bank and placed it in a purse under the car seat. This money was meant to support our family during the holidays.
Before we left Musina, he asked me if I had seen the purse.
I hadn't.
We searched everywhere. It was gone.
In a busy border town, the purse had likely slipped out unnoticed — and just like that, the money was gone.
That moment stayed with me.
